Seeding Canal-Side Yards
Hydroseeding in Apollo Beach means working on ground barely above the bay. The community sits about 7 feet above sea level, and much of it was mangrove and low land once considered uninhabitable. Today an estimated 55 miles of canals lead to Tampa Bay. On a canal-front lot, almost every square foot drains to the water, so keeping soil on the lot during and after a job is the main concern.
Dredge-and-fill ground
The canal system was built by dredging, and lots along dredged canals can sit on fill. Fill soil is often a mix of sand, shell and finer material, and it can be uneven in quality across a single yard. Before seeding we check the surface, rake out shell and debris, and level low spots so water does not pond on the new lawn.
Keeping sediment out of canals
When a seawall, pool or addition goes in, the yard gets torn up right next to the water. We set silt fence or another barrier along the canal side, seed or mulch the disturbed area, and leave the barrier until grass covers the ground. Hydromulch helps because it bonds to the surface and resists splash erosion from heavy summer storms.
Steady growth
Apollo Beach grew from about 7,400 residents in 2000 to roughly 26,000 in 2020, with new construction driving much of it. Newer sections away from the canals have retention ponds and common areas that need cover after building.
Mangroves left standing
Thomas Corr, who led much of the development, preserved hundreds of acres of mangrove swamps and environmental areas. Lots that back onto those areas need extra care to keep slurry and soil out of the preserve.

Apollo Beach Questions
Will grass grow on dredged fill?
Usually, once shell and debris are raked out and low spots are leveled. Some lots benefit from a thin topsoil layer.
Do I need a barrier along my canal during a pool install?
It is the simplest way to keep sand and slurry out of the canal. Plan on keeping it up until the yard is grassed.
Does salt spray hurt new seed?
It can affect some grasses. We pick a mix suited to your exposure and spacing from the water.
Can you seed next to a mangrove preserve?
Yes, with care to keep slurry on your lot and a barrier between bare soil and the preserve.
