Clearwater Ground Is Not All Flat
Hydroseeding in Clearwater runs into more grade than people expect. Fort Harrison was built around 1835 on a bluff overlooking Clearwater Harbor, and that bluff later became the Harbor Oaks neighborhood. The city's elevation is listed at about 66 feet, well above most of the bay shore. Bluff-side and sloped yards lose soil quickly once the grass thins, and they hold seed far better when it goes on as a bonded hydroseed slurry.
Springs and wet spots
The old bluff had many freshwater springs, some of them in the harbor itself, and the city's name may come from a spring near the old City Hall site. Some Clearwater yards still have seeps or damp low corners that stay wet after the rest of the lawn dries. We find those before seeding and either regrade or pick a grass that handles wet soil.
Wet and dry seasons
Clearwater gets about 52.6 inches of rain a year, with daily thundershowers from June through September and a dry season from October through May. New seed in the dry months depends on irrigation; in the wet months, we watch the forecast to avoid a downpour on day one.
Pinellas rules on graded ground
Pinellas County requires perimeter controls such as silt fence before mass grading, inlet protection, and stabilization of soil exposed for seven days or more. It also asks contractors to phase grading to limit disturbed soil. On Clearwater infill lots and commercial pads, we can handle the silt fence and the seeding so the site stays in compliance.
A built-out city
Clearwater had more than 117,000 residents in 2020 and little open land. Most work is renovation, regrading for drainage, and seeding after demolition or a new build on an old lot.

Clearwater Questions
Can you seed a sloped yard near the harbor?
Yes. We use a bonding mulch on moderate slopes and an erosion blanket where the grade is steep.
Why does one corner of my lawn stay wet?
It may be a seep, low spot or drainage problem. We look at it before seeding and suggest a fix or a wet-tolerant grass.
Does my infill project need silt fence?
Pinellas County requires perimeter controls before grading on construction sites. We can install and maintain them.
Is fall seeding OK in Clearwater?
With good irrigation it can work, since freezes are rare. Late spring and summer are still the easiest windows.
