Slopes Above the Hillsborough River

Hydroseeding in Temple Terrace often deals with grade. The city's name refers to the terraced terrain by the river, and the landscape is described as rolling, which is unusual for the Tampa area. The Hillsborough River runs through the eastern and southern parts of the city and forms part of its southern boundary. Yards that step down toward the river lose topsoil faster than flat lots, so hydroseed with a bonding mulch is a good fit.

Built on orange groves and a game preserve

Before the city was laid out, the land was part of Bertha Palmer's 19,000-acre Riverhills game preserve. In the 1920s, about 5,000 acres of orange groves surrounded the new town, described at the time as the largest orange grove in the world. Some neighborhoods, like Temple Crest, were carved from that grove land. Old grove soil is often sandy, and decades of shade and leaf litter change how a lawn behaves.

Shade from big trees

Temple Terrace has sand live oak, longleaf pine and cypress, and Woodmont Park holds some of the city's largest live oaks and longleaf pines. Under heavy canopy, a sun-loving grass will thin out no matter how it was planted. We will tell you honestly where grass can grow and where mulch beds or groundcover make more sense.

Flood control nearby

The 14-mile Tampa Bypass Canal was built in the 1960s and 1970s to divert floodwater from the Hillsborough River away from homes in Temple Terrace and Tampa. Even with that protection, riverbank and low lots can take water in big storms. Those riverside slopes get rolled blankets or a bonded fiber matrix over the seed, with silt fence up during any regrading.

Golf-course community roots

The city was planned in the 1920s as a Mediterranean Revival golf course community, one of the first of its kind in the country. Many older homes sit on generous lots where lawn renovation, regrading for drainage and reseeding are common jobs.

Temple Terrace Questions

Can hydroseed hold on my sloped backyard?

On moderate slopes, yes, with a bonding mulch. On steep sections facing the river we add erosion control blankets.

Will grass grow under my live oaks?

Only partly, and it depends on how much light gets through. We may suggest a shade-tolerant mix or leaving the deepest shade unplanted.

Do I need silt fence to regrade near the river?

Yes, it is a good idea any time bare soil can drain to the river. It stays until the new grass covers the ground.

Is lawn renovation possible without tearing everything out?

Often. Overseeding into thin turf works if the soil and drainage are sound.
