Stabilizing Construction Ground at Scale
Builder and site hydroseeding in Tampa covers the ground that construction leaves behind: subdivision common areas, retention pond banks, building pads waiting on a sale, utility trenches, road shoulders and commercial lots. As hydroseeding contractors, we work for builders, site work companies, developers and property managers who need disturbed soil covered quickly and need it to stay covered until grass takes over.
Why stabilization is not optional here
The City of Tampa states plainly that it is illegal to discharge soil and sediment off a construction site, and its inspectors routinely check that erosion controls are installed and maintained. Violations can lead to citations, fines or a stop-work order. Across the bay, Pinellas County requires disturbed soil exposed for seven days or more to be stabilized. Under Florida DEP rules, a site that disturbs an acre or more, or a smaller lot inside a bigger phased development, needs coverage under the Construction Generic Permit, including a stormwater pollution prevention plan. Coverage ends with a Notice of Termination, filed within 14 days after the site reaches final stabilization. Seeding is often the last item between a builder and closing out that permit.
What we seed
- Retention and detention pond side slopes and tops of bank
- Lot fronts, side yards and rear swales in new subdivisions
- Common areas, entrance berms and open space
- Utility and drainage trench lines after backfill
- Road shoulders and ditch banks
- Commercial out-parcels and pad sites waiting on vertical construction
Choosing the mix
Permanent stabilization in this area usually means bahiagrass. UF/IFAS describes it as deep-rooted and tolerant of infertile, sandy soil, and notes the Pensacola variety, with its many seed heads, is well suited to roadside plantings. When ground has to be covered before the right season for permanent grass, we can add a quick nurse crop so something is holding the sand while the bahia comes in. Where a project has an engineer's or agency seed specification, we follow it and match the rates on the plans.
Working around the rainy season
Tampa averages 49.48 inches of rain a year, with June through September carrying most of it. A pond bank seeded in May has a full rainy season to grow in. One seeded in August may face several inches of rain in a week before it roots. For midsummer jobs we raise the mulch rate, use tackifier, and recommend blankets in channels and on steeper banks. In the dry season the opposite problem shows up: seed needs a water truck or irrigation to get started. We tell you which situation you are in before we schedule.
Working with your schedule
On active projects we usually come in phases: as lots are graded, as ponds are shaped, and at closeout. Phasing matches what Pinellas County calls for, keeping soil disturbance small where possible, and it keeps bare areas from sitting exposed for weeks. We can work alongside your silt fence and inlet protection, or install and maintain them ourselves. For large areas, hydroseeding companies like ours can cover acres in a day from the truck and hose, reaching banks and slopes that are hard to sod.
Getting areas ready for us
Hydroseed is only as good as the grade under it. Before we mobilize, areas should be at final grade, free of construction debris, rocks and concrete washout, and loose enough on top to take seed. UF/IFAS recommends stockpiling topsoil during heavy grading and spreading it back before planting, and notes that construction traffic can compact soil more than a foot deep. On pads and common areas that have been driven on for months, a pass with a tiller or harrow before seeding makes a real difference in how fast cover forms. We note anything that is not ready on the walk-through so it can be fixed before the truck arrives.
What you get
- A written estimate by area or acre, with mobilizations listed
- Seed, mulch and tackifier rates stated in the estimate
- Photos and dates of application for your SWPPP records
- Notes on any area that needs reseeding after a washout
Hurricane season and open ground
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and passing tropical systems can drop several inches of rain in a day. Graded ground that is still bare when a storm is forecast is at the most risk. When a system is coming, we prioritize pond banks, slopes and lots that drain toward inlets, and we can come back afterward to reseed rills and washed edges. Builders who seed in phases rather than all at closeout tend to have far less to redo after a storm, because most of the site already has roots in it. If a storm does cut through new seed, we walk the site with you and price only the repairs, so you are not paying to redo areas that held.

Builder & Site Hydroseeding Questions
How much do hydroseeding contractors charge per acre?
Published guides range from about $2,000 to $4,897 per acre (Fixr, LawnStarter), with some listing up to $8,700 for an acre. Slope, access, mulch rate and how many trips the job needs drive the number. We price your site in writing.
Does hydroseeding count as final stabilization?
Stabilization depends on the vegetative cover actually established, as defined in your permit, not just on seed being sprayed. Hydroseeding is how many sites get there. Check your permit's definition and keep the area watered until cover forms.
Can you seed retention pond banks?
Yes. Pond side slopes are one of the most common jobs. Steeper banks or areas that carry flow may also need erosion control blankets.
Do you work from engineered plans?
Yes. If your plans or an agency spec list seed types and rates, we match them and note it on the estimate.
Can you seed in the dry season?
Yes, but the seed will need water. We discuss irrigation or water truck options before scheduling.
